Stories for February 7, 2008

I'd like to address the uproar I've seen in a few different places over my comments regarding Kingdom Hearts III. This hasn't come up amongst my comments much, so this isn't so much directed there, as much as it is at a few forums where I've seen discussion about my statements.

Now certainly, I do not at all object to people questioning or disbelieving or even completely disregarding my statements. I don't expect to be believed unquestioningly by all because indeed, I am merely a humble blogger sharing info that I cannot rightly prove to be true. I rather encourage all of my readers to think for themselves, and to only believe me if they personally choose to do so. So, this not me being upset at people who don't believe my info. This is just a follow-up to and expansion of my original story, for those who want more info.

Let me begin by saying that what I was told about the plans for the game, I was told a number of months ago. Things may have changed since then, certainly. This game is a long ways off; it's only in the planning stages at the moment. Any and everything about it could change between now and the time it enters actual production. So could market conditions.

But I maintain that what I said is true. I was told, by an involved party, that the current target platform for Kingdom Hearts III (as in "III," and not a spin-off) is the Nintendo Wii. This is due to one thing, predominantly: demographics. Yes, Kingdom Hearts has most certainly attracted a considerable following of those who can't count their age on all of their digits combined. Yes, Disney and Square-Enix know this. But the fact is, this is still a franchise targeted most squarely at 9-to-14-year-olds. And at this moment, the Wii is far and away the top performer among this age group.

Disney (whose interest and investment in the property is at an all-time high) wants this game marketed to and targeted at the largest audience possible, while keeping it on one of the three new systems, and they've decided that the Wii is the system to do this on. Disney feels absolutely no loyalty whatsoever to Sony (or anyone else) or the PlayStation family. They know they've got a hot property here, and they are not letting anything stand in the way of taking it as far as possible. As of right now, they don't think that the PlayStation 3 is the platform that will facilitate this.

That so many found this such an outrageous idea really surprises me. This isn't about personal preference, or what system you personally think is the best, and most certainly, none of this story has anything at all to do with me or my feelings. This is about demographics and marketing, and what Disney feels will allow this series to go as far as it can. So, I repeat: I have been told that Disney wants Kingdom Hearts III on the Nintendo Wii.

Anyways, enough of this. We now return to our irregularly scheduled program...

- This all reminds me that plans for an animated Kingdom Hearts project are not necessarily permanently scrapped, just way on the back burner for now.

- For the few people out there who are wondering and looking for closure, it seems as though the long-dormant plans for a North American release of Nintendo's bit Generations series have completely disintegrated. Pity.

- Capcom does have plans for a North American release of Kabu Trader Shun; expect it to be branded as "Ace Stock Trader."

It would still make more sense to put it on the PS3, considering the main storyline ran on the PS2. But, what can ya do? =\

Anyway, my questions:

1) Any upcoming Italian Mobster games coming out for the PS3/Next-Gen Consoles?

2) Any HUGE plans for Sony at GDC 2008?

3) I just want to know, whats your take on the Square Enix Final Fantasy VII PS3 remake? Is it happening? Whats going on?

4) The PS Store going to get games like Duke Nukem 3D? How about any exclusive remakes?

Thanks!

"It would still make more sense to put it on the PS3, considering the main storyline ran on the PS2. But, what can ya do? =\"

Sony has basically removed PS2 BC from all their current PS3 models, so it pretty much doesn't matter where KH3 ends up now.

Besides, 3rd parties do what the fuck they want. FF moved from Nintendo to Sony back in the 90s, because of cartridges. Resident Evil jumped from Sony (though RE was pretty much multi-platform even back then) to Nintendo because Shinji Mikami hated the PS2. Ace Combat jumped to the 360 because of Western sales.

Shit happens. Buy all systems.

Don't get me wrong. I have a Wii and all, but I wouldn't want to be playing an epic game like KH3 on it. Games like Mario, No More Heroes, and such, I don't mind.

KH3 deserves to be at it's best. Bad ass graphics, powerful ass system, and one epic ass game.

To the anonymous poster above me....keep an eye on Mafia 2, the first Mafia was an excellent game (on PC). The sequel is coming to PC, 360, and PS3.

Skaterboy, Just a couple of questions, actually relating to some things you mentioned in previous answers to other people's questions in the past.

1. I think I remember you mentioning that Monolith was looking into NOLF3 as a possible project after Project Origin and Condemned 2, but it won't be called "NOLF3". How much of a chance do you think this has of happening? Would it feature Cate Archer? Does Monolith have the rights where they could create a NOLF sequel where the only thing that would have to change is the title but the game universe and characters remain intact?

2. In an answer to someone else's question you hinted at BioShock 2 being one of the "Big" 360 exclusives MS has planned....does that mean that BioShock 2 won't come to PC? Will we have to wait two years for it to hit PC or will it most likely be simultaneous release?

3. I think I remember you mentioning SWAT 5 being developed by Sierra. I know Irrational isn't involved, but how close is SWAT 5 to following the formula of previous installments like SWAT 3 and SWAT 4?

4. If Gearbox is supposedly now doing a Halo game, does that mean that their Aliens game is now on the backburner and can we expect to not see that for a long time? especially since they still have yet to release their new Brothers in Arms game.

5. Is Rockstar Toronto doing Max Payne 3?

6. Crytek's two satellite studios are supposedly working on two seperate new IPs. Do you have any idea what their Kiev Studio is working on and what their Budapest studio is working on? Will EA be the publisher for these two supposed projects?

7. It was recently confirmed that Crysis sold over a million copies in two months and that EA was very pleased with the worldwide sales numbers since they highlighted it in their investor conference call. Chances of an Expansion on PC later this year?

Anonymous said...

1)Is Street Fighter 4 gonna be released this year?on which platforms?
2)Is Dead rising 2 x360 exclusive?
3)When Max Payne 3 will be announced and released?
4)When Mafia 2 will be released
5)You said you`ll name few unannounced x360 exclusives.....
6)Ninja Gaiden 2 will stay x360 exclusive right?!
7)Which x360 titles RARE are working except banjo3?
8)Do you if we will finally see DUKE nukem forever this year?and on which platform?

the kh final mix ending video doesn't seem very kid-targeted to me. and the high end CG graphics also imply that the series is going that direction too. which sets everyone up perfectly for PS3.

also, the kh games weren't the easiest either, and don't seem like something that the non-gamer wii market would be able to get into very well, unless they dumb things down and add waggle.

another great series bites the dust in favor of waggle so sad. played fatal frame last night and kept giving my dusty wii dirty looks.

either way, thank you skaterboy, for not throwing in gibberish and lame jokes into your posts like surfergirl. your posts are always clean and straight to the point.

Hey Man,

I was wondering if you could answer something for me.

Since Jaffe's eat.sleep.play has apparently revealed that they are developing a Twisted Metal game for the PS3 for release in 2009, does this mean that someone else could be developing a smaller version of Twisted Metal for PSN this year like Sony's SOCOM Confrontation and Wipeout HD?

Thanks for your help. Keep up the good work. :)

Anon One:
As I stated, Disney feels no loyalty to any system. They want it where it will make the most money. Ya know, if this blog had existed in 1995, and I posted something like "Final Fantasy VII will be a PlayStation game, instead of an N64 game," no one would have believed that, either.
1) Mafia II looks good.
2) Nothing that I, personally, would call "HUGE" in all-caps.
3) Yes, it's happening. No, it's not like that old video they showed at E3 2005. Honestly, it's more on the "enhanced port" end of the spectrum, than the "full-blown remake" end. Personally, I don't think this version of the game adds anything that would make it worth playing through this tired old game again.
4) No Duke on PSN. Some exclusive "remakes," though, yes.

Anon Two:
Again, Disney and Square-Enix's primary concern is not about making the game have "epic" appeal for the older-teen and above market. The target market is still 'tweens and young teens.

nameless1:
1) It might be more of a pipe dream for them than anything. Vivendi owns the rights still, so if they did want to continue NOLF, they'd have to do something similar to what's happening with Project Origin.
2) Microsoft considers PC, or rather, "Games for Windows," to be one of their platforms. It'll be on both, simultaneously.
3) Pretty similar.
4) Aliens is still front-and-center.
5) Vancouver, I thought.
6) Dunno, sorry.
7) No.

kookoo:
1) Should be this year. PS3 and 360.
2) No.
3) No idea, the development has been quite troubled so far.
4) This fall, I think.
5) But I didn't say when.
6) Yes.
7) Some Mr Pants thing for XBLA, a couple other XBLA projects, and planning for Killer Instinct 3.
8) 3D Realms never tells anyone anything other than "when it's done." There isn't any secret insider info on that. It will be on PC, PS3, and 360.

alex:
Don't take this personally or anything, but I really do not at all understand the older segment of Kingdom Hearts' fanbase, specifically, those who have appearantly convinced themselves that this series is much more dark and somber than it actually is. Don't let all the gothy belts and occasionally dark colors mislead you; these games are squarely aimed at children, 9 to 14. By the way, I think it's grossly unfair to suggest that the entire 20 million-strong Wii userbase is mostly "non-gamer." The market Disney wants is on it, and that's what matters to them. Fatal Frame 4 looks very good, by the way.

john matrix:
A PSN-exclusive Twisted Metal game is coming, yes.

He skaterboy,

nice blog btw! I am gonna ask a tired old question. How true is it that Gears of War 2 will be annouced @ GDC? Because it seems odd with all the gears information leaking (like magezine's, epic's post on there forum, Shane Kim From Microsoft saying ''there just rumours''). I bet it will have a 50/50 shot @ being GDC.

Hero of Legend said...

Hey, thanks again for the answers before, you've done a great job on the blog, and you're very detailed and straight to the point, give yourself a hand, you deserve it!

1. You mentioned that Crash Bandicoot will be getting a handheld game this year, is it for DS? And who developing it?

2. Any idea if the current designs of the Crash Bandicoot characters are staying or not? Or will they go back to the previous designs?

3. Is Radical the only developer who will make the console Crash games? I'd like Ready at Dawn to have a crack at Crash, for obvious reasons. :P

4. As for Spyro, I understand the current Legend series is going to be a trilogy, after the third game, will the IMO horrid designs still be used, or will Spyro return to his previous designs?

That's it, thanks again!

Alex said...

Yeah, I can understand the logic, but at the same time I think there are themes, plot elements, and the way combat and the overall gameplay system works that puts this just outside of the WESTERN 9-14 audience's grasp(err, rather let's say 9-12) or understanding.

I guess it's just a difference of opinion. I think Disney probably told SE what demographic they were aiming at, and SE took it upon themselves to put it toward possibly the JAPANESE crowd of that age range.

The spin-offs may be a lot easier to understand and swallow etc. for younger audiences, but as for 1 and 2 I think those are more of a Teen+ thing than for kids.

Yeah, Fatal Frame will be missed. I'm just the type where I want my games to progress in all areas, not JUST gameplay or JUST graphics. That's why so many Wii games just fall flat to me personally because they have a few things right, but graphics and other elements lack- and due to power restraints always will. Same with a lot of 1st-batch 'nextgen' games that basically just changed their resolution output and called it a day.

Oh well, at least I got 3 good FF games out of it, and two good KH games.

@pointman_4000: What he meant was that the PS2 fanbase is already hooked on the game series and following, and are most likely to transfer to the PS3, so why divert them to a different platform just for one series. Many people instantly lose interest as soon as an IP jumps ships with their traditional platform.

Either way, I think the initially huge negative reaction to this, what we should still consider a rumor, speaks for itself.

What kind of development wall has Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle: The Crystal Bearers (or whatever its been renamed to) hit? Why is Squeenix keeping quiet about it for such a long time when it looked so good in the last trailer?

Thanks and awesome blog. :)

AWESOME news! Do you have any idea of a possible release date?

Sony Computer Entertainment published a game in Japan called Chain Dive: http://ps2.ign.com/objects/571/571846.html

Do you have any idea if it will come to the US? They had an import demo on an old demo disc from OPM a while while back. The game is addictive fun.

1) I understand the youth demographic on the Wii but have publishers and developers gotten to the point where they think there is also a lucrative adult market on the Wii?
2) Will Afro Samurai come to the Wii.

Anonymous said...

First off, I want to thank you for the efforts you've given up to this point in this blog. I was wondering if you could clear up something for me.

When inquired about the rumor of a "Skies of Arcadia" sequel in development for the Wii, both you and SG answered similarly.

"Seems so."

I may just be reading too much into it, but does this mean there is still nothing concrete and that there's a significant chance that project may not come in to fruition? The report from yesterday mentioned that Sega will be cutting 400 jobs in '08 has led me to question if they might be forced to scrap a few of their projects, and it would be pretty painful to hear if this game happened to be one of them.

Also, just out of curiosity, did Square-Enix go with the flow on Disney's stance regarding KH3, or had they set their hopes on another system initially?

Cruiz said...

Hi skaterboy

Firstly I want to say thanks for clearing up the whole KH3 issue.

Now, onto some questions, if you don't mind:

1) I understand Disney has no loyalty to Sony, but do you not think that perhaps increased sales of the PS3, plus the fact that Disney release their titles on bluray could not sway them to release KH3 on the PS3? Also, does Square have no say in the matter?

2) I read on another blog, from a woman who does hear some insider information on the rare occasion, that PSP firmware 4.0, will contain .avi* support like 2.10 for PS3. Is there any truth to this? Also, will it contain the exact same additions as the PS3 update, for instance, also including WMV playback? Lastly, how long until it is released?

3) There was talk of Vagrant Story being remade for the PSP. Is it happening?

4) Will Sony ever release games from other consoles (non-Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony) on the PSN?

5) In regards to in-game XMB for the PS3, what other surprises, if any at all, can we expect from the PS3's next firmware update?

6) Is Sony working on a Bleach title for PS3?

7) Do the ingame graphics of Naruto on PS3 look like those shown in the recent trailer?

8) Will there ever be a One Piece PS3 title?

9) When is Microsoft Vienna being released?

10) David Jaffe has expressed that his story for God of War 3, should be the one used? Will his story be used? Also, how is GOW3 shaping up at the moment?

thx

Skater boy here are a few questions thoughts

Shane Kim said they was a lot in store form microsoft's side for the 360 and he did happen to mention Alan WAke besides the regular bunch...I guess it is coming out this year cause they never mentioned it last year and suddenly they have started a blaze with Aaln wake again...I also wanted to ask something about conviction, the technique CQC although being introduced in MGS is actually pretty basic...but the CQC i've seen in Conviction and seems more fluid and fun to do.Is it true. And somehting about I.D. tech 5 any other game using it aapart from their shooter...and I forgot Crytek's Chief was also talking about their tech being Licensed....any clues on the game or games on that engine...Croteam Serious sam III engine looks fucking amazing where is coming back...the last I saw were scans from a german mag in early 07

Thanks for the info Skaterboy! You rock mah world!!

Hi Skater Boy. I have a question.

Why are western developers and publishers doing such a bad job on the Wii and DS?

Although EA seem to be doing a fair job Ubisoft have been an absolute disaster on both systems so far. Activison aren't much better.

Even talented development houses like gearbox, obsidian, bethesda, pandemic, rockstar etc have shown nothing but the odd port on the Wii.

Considering that the Wii and DS are universally popular why is this still happening?

Hey SB

Any truth behind the scuttlebug rumours about one of my all time fave developers Free Radical?

1) The next Star Wars Battlefront game that FR are developing for Lucasarts is going to be a 360 exclusive?

2) Sony are currently 'kicking the tires' on FR and will either sign FR to do an exclusive for the PS3 or sign them to some larger deal, perhaps even buy them?

Thanks for your help.

Keep up the good work with the blog.

I may as well get this other question out the way:

Besdies the Sonic Wii game and Chronicles, what other Sonic games are coming that you know of?

There were reports a bit ago that Sega was underway with annother "big" Sonic game, is this the Wii game? Or another one?

Does Sega plan on keeping Sonic on the Wii, both with exclusive and multiplatform projects, or will Sonic appear on the 360 and PS3 exclusively again?

Anyway - heres the questions:

ShenMue3/Trilogy - ever going to be a reality?

So youre saying the Wii Turrican is going to be like Metroid Prime - but are you sure its going to be named Turrican? The rights for the name are owned by Factor5 in the US and by THQ in europe - how is that going to work? Release it under different name?

And what about the PSN Turrican - will that be classic 2D?

Any new Castlevania games coming?

Hi Skater Boy,

1)How possible is to from Disney and Squarenix to announce ports of KH1 and 2 to Wii with the announcement of KH3?Does it make sense to port also the previous games so the new demographic learns the proper way about the franchise's plot?
2)Is it possible that the Shenmue franchise returns to Wii?Maybe a Shenmue 1+2 compilation to test the waters for the conclusion of the trilogy.
3)Any chances the Nights PS2 remake gets ported to Wii?
4)Do the rumours hold any truth about the new Animal Crossing for Wii being an MMO?Can we expect it in 2008?
5)Starfox Wii.Is it happening and by who?
6)Do you know what is Monster Games next Wii game after Excitetruck?
7)You said that a Wii hard drive is very far.As a semi-solution is Nintendo planning to allow saves and VC games being playable from an SD card via a firmware update? If yes,can we expect it in March around WiiWare's launch?
8)After Master System's announcement for VC the rumours claim for Sega Saturn being the next. What do you think? Is it possible?
9)Do you know anythink at all about Kid Icarus on Wii?Is it real or simply fanboys's dream?
10)After Monolith's acquisation from Nintendo,is Nintendo planning to buy another company?Any megaton size purchase of a company like Sega or even Capcom?
11)Finally,as the RE franchise sells so well on the Wii,is it possible for Capcom to release RE5 downgraded port for the Wii?Recently some people started a petition for a RE5 Wii port with over 35000 signatures till today.Capcom cant resist to easy money and they even ported RE4 to cellphones! What do you think? Can we expect a RE5 Wii port down the line?

thesameold:
100%. Gears of War 2 will be at GDC.

hero of legend:
1) You'll see it on DS. Don't remember the developer, I only caught a word or two about the game...it may have been Dimps.
2) The designs will stay more or less the same as they are now.
3) Other developers are possible, though Ready at Dawn is somewhat unlikely.
4) Dunno what'll happen after the next Spyro game, but I wouldn't ever expect the series to return to the character designs of the PS1 games, for instance.

alex:
I guess I just can't get eye-to-eye with the mindset that considers a game starring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy alongside a typically "anime" spiky-haired, bug-eyed 15-year-old to be a specifically "Teen+" affair (though I certainly understand why some older players are attracted to it).
I'd implore you to try to not write off Wii games so quickly, but that's not my job. I'll leave that to quality games on Wii, because if they can't do it, nothing can.
Lastly, I must comment on the statment that "Many people instantly lose interest as soon as an IP jumps ships with their traditional platform."
Try telling that to Final Fantasy.

the end of yaru:
It needed lots of refinement to it's (at the time, rather boring) combat system, as well as just plain lots more regular development work. Remember that there was about year between the debut and second trailer for the game, as well (though it did undergo major character redesign during this period, making it look more like Kingdom Hearts, which disappointed me somewhat).

Anon One:
Nothing more specific than "TBA 2008," though that may slip.

Anon Two:
No, sorry. I imported that game and rather enjoyed it.

Anon Three:
1) Some have, most certainly. Expect for games on Wii to only get more diverse as time goes on.
2) Nope.

pesmerga:
It's entirely possible that it won't happen. It's not a terribly high-priority project, so it may get axed. Stay hopeful, though.
Square-Enix wants what is best for the franshise.

cruizd:
1) Like I said, anything could happen. Square-Enix certainly has a say, but Disney ultimately owns the IP.
2) ".avi" is not a video codec; it's a video container. I think you meant "DivX." Anyways, fairly likely. Not sure about WMV or a date, though.
3) Possible, but not in production or anything.
4) Pretty unlikely, though there may be some exceptions to the rule here and there.
5) In-game XMB is the big goal for now.
6) Dunno. I'm sure someone is.
7) Yes. It looks about as good as the Xbox 360 one, overall.
8) Several, I'm sure.
9) The codename "Vienna" was retired some time ago. It's new codename is "Windows 7." Anyways, I have no idea, aside from the supposed roadmap that points to H2 2009.
10) Dunno, haven't seen anything.

1000:
I'd be surprised if Alan Wake didn't make it this year. Close Quarters in Conviction is pretty good. id (one word, lower caps, by the way; the name refers to a psychological concept, not "identification") has not begun licensing id Tech 5 to third parties yet, though they do plan to use it for Quake 5, eventually.
CryEngine 2 has been licensed out for a while now, and is being used in a number of third-party games, including Mindark's Entropia Universe, Avatar Reality's Blue Mars, Reloaded's The Day, Paleo's Merchants of Brooklyn, an MMO from XMLGames, and a military training game (which will not be available publcily) by Harrington Group called Vigilance.
Croteam's next game won't ship until sometime in 2009.

hero of legend:
I don't know.

moony:
PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, of course. Dunno any story specifics. TBA 2009. Not much else, it's still fairly early.

-zoe':
As I've stated before, there is what appears to be a core SMT game on PS3, and a game for Wii, at least. Persona 4 is probably happening, but I haven't seen it.

mike:
Gee, that's a pretty big question. I really don't know how to answer that.

Anon Four:
Not really, sorry. It's basically just a bullet-point on a release list.

Anon Five:
PES 2009 is looking really nice, now that it's more next-gen specific. Seabass' claims of largely overhauling the game are not unsubstantiated. Fifa looks like Fifa.

cruizd:
Nothing much more than that it's in development, sorry. Release this year is possible.

Anon Six:
Not at the moment, to my knowledge.

gorillamuseum:
The PSP thing was actually an enhanced port of both Suikoden 1 and 2. Anyways, pretty much no chance of seeing it stateside, unfortunately. PSN is very possible. Other PS1 RPGs on PSN is guaranteed.

globox82:
1) I haven't heard anything about an FPS from Team SOHO.
2) Nope, sorry.

yo:
Sure they do, the series is a highly collaberative effort. Disney has a lot of veto leverege, though.

nickname:
Yes, it looks like one of the best online experiances for Wii, easily, and the graphics are quite impressive.

lorenzo lamas:
1) No, there are no 360-exclusive Star Wars games in development.
2) No, that's not true.

kookoo:
1) Nope.
2) Nah.
3) If it weren't for Viva Pinata (which I love), I'd say with no reservation that it's easily Rare's best 360 effort so far. Release is set for this fall, but Rare is Rare, so delays can always happen...
4) It might.

hero of legend:
I'm not sure which Sonic game is considered the "big" one, but as usual, there are several in the works, for all three of the newest platforms. There are apparently plans for a sequel to that (wretched, in my opinion) 360/PS3 Sonic game.

yencid:
Banjo-Kazooie 3 was announced about a year and a half ago, and should come out this holiday season. Conker's Bad Fur Day was already remade on Xbox 1. Killer Instinct 3 is happening. Jet Force Gemini isn't happening at the moment, but is very possible.

Anon Seven:
1) Pretty much guaranteed to never happen. Shenmue Online also appears to be cancelled. The series is dead, sadly.
2) The name is undetermined.
3) PSN Turrican? I haven't seen that, personally.
4) Yes, a next-gen one, and another one for DS.

julius:
Nope, sure don't. Sorry.

link:
No. I also doubt that she knows my identity.

1000:
